The Brief
A historic country house hotel set within a former Cistercian abbey, surrounded by five hundred acres of parkland landscaped by Capability Brown. The brief was to refresh key interior spaces without erasing the layers of history that make Coombe Abbey so singular. Where some might see the weight of the past as a restriction, we saw a story waiting to be told with greater clarity.
The Challenge
The greatest challenge lay in balance. Coombe Abbey is defined by its grand stone arches, leaded windows and timber detailing, each element carrying centuries of character. Any intervention had to feel as though it had always belonged.
We approached the interiors with restraint, layering rich textiles, deep jewel tones and antique-inspired finishes against the original architecture. Bespoke joinery and carefully sourced furniture were chosen to echo the gothic romance of the building, while considered lighting softened the grandeur into something intimate and welcoming.
Every material was selected to age gracefully alongside the abbey, ensuring the new and the historic feel like one continuous narrative rather than two competing voices.
Why Black Ivy
Coombe Abbey approached us for our sensitivity to heritage and our experience crafting atmospheric hospitality spaces. From our first walk through the abbey, it was clear there was a shared understanding of what made the place special.
The client wanted to deepen the sense of escape that guests feel on arrival, without losing the authenticity that draws people to Coombe Abbey in the first place. We wanted every detail to feel intentional, every room to tell a story, and the result is a series of spaces that feel both timeless and alive.
The Result
The reimagined interiors invite guests to step out of the present and into a world of candlelit corridors, velvet-clad lounges and quiet, romantic corners. The architecture sings once more, framed rather than competed with, and the abbey now feels as enchanting inside as the parkland that surrounds it.
For its guests, Coombe Abbey remains a place out of time, now wrapped in interiors that celebrate its history while gently carrying it forward.
“Leanne and her team understood the soul of this place instinctively. They have enhanced its magic without ever overshadowing it.”
