The Brief
This project marked our second collaboration with Football Taverns Ltd, a group that specialises in turning sports venues into immersive fan experiences across the UK. Together we set out to capture the spirit of Swansea City AFC’s supporters in a flexible venue combining dining, bar and entertainment zones that could work equally well for a packed match day or a quiet weeknight.
The Challenge
A sports bar has to work twice as hard as most hospitality venues: it needs to handle the intensity of match-day crowds while still feeling welcoming to everyday visitors the rest of the week. Clear zoning was key to giving the space that flexibility without compromising on atmosphere.
We drew on Swansea City AFC’s visual heritage to shape the concept, using a bold monochrome palette, strong typography and considered lighting to build contrast and depth. Graffiti-inspired artwork, retro tiling and raw, honest finishes nod to the club’s history, blending memory and materiality into one cohesive space.
Why Black Ivy
Having recently completed the Sky Blue Tavern in Coventry, an equally iconic partnership between Football Taverns Ltd and Coventry City FC, continuing the relationship into Swansea felt like a natural next step. Black Ivy Design is known for creating spaces that capture the true fan experience and give supporters somewhere to belong.
Football Taverns share our commitment to designing venues that embody the heart of local clubs. Every decision on this project was made with the Jack Army in mind, as a way of giving something back to supporters in recognition of their loyalty.
The Result
The finished venue offers flexible dining, bar and entertainment zones built to serve match-day crowds and everyday visitors alike. Whether hosting live sport, community events or casual dining, The Swansea Jack was designed to feel as meaningful as it is functional — a space shaped by memory, emotion and the enduring loyalty of its supporters.
